BRAC Institute of Education Development (BIED) is inventing new play-based models of childhood education, offering hope that every child in Bangladesh can flourish.
When it comes to helping children break the cycle of adversity, one of the best ways of intervening is to create an environment where kids can do what they do best – play. There's a growing body of evidence that well-designed interventions in the early years lead to positive outcomes for physical and mental health, educational achievement and economic productivity.
Since 2014, Porticus has supported the BRAC Institute of Education Development (BIED) as they developed ground breaking models of play-based pre-primary education in Bangladesh. Having piloted the curriculum, BIED went on to deliver it in more than 200 Play Labs and share their evidence with the Directorate of Primary Education (DPE).
Play really works, and such interventions are sorely needed in Bangladesh where problems like chronic undernutrition and stunting in children under five are still widespread. BIED is working closely with the government to introduce this curriculum into the state school system. We hope to continue to support this collaboration so that play-based learning becomes mainstream and every child in Bangladesh has the start in life they deserve.
